Event description:
The Academy Concert Series presents: Glamour and Grace - French chamber music from the last decade of the Ancien Régime (1779-1789). Eastminster United Church, Toronto, 310 Danforth Avenue, November 21st, 2009 at 8 p.m. - a one-of-a-kind programme of refined, elegant and joyful music of Pre-Revolutionary France, presented on 18th century original instruments and performed by historical instruments experts Sharon Burlacoff (fortepiano), Nicolai Tarasov (clarinet), Anthony Rapoport (viola), and Robin Howell (bassoon). In the mid 18th century, France was a shining model of the elegant, sensitive and expressive musical style inspired by the aesthetic ideals of Enlightenment and Reason. With a musical language that is neat, precise, lucid, and economical - truly the equivalent to Antoine de Rivarol’s (1753-1801) famous summation "ce qui n’est pas clair n’est pas français" ("that which is not clear is not French") – French composers like Jean-François Tapray (1738-1819), François Devienne (1759-1803), Nicolas Dalayrac (1753-1809), and Jean-Baptiste Bréval (1753-1823), whose works are featured in this programme, were creating opuses for a most specific and worthy purpose: to convey pleasurable, joyful feelings and delicate sentiments to the audience. Lightness, grace, intrinsic glamour and refinement are at the core of this music. It is rare to find in it any latent tension or fleeting anxiety. It is as though it were composed in a different world, one that did not know - or pretended not to know - darkness or misery; as though there is nothing but elegance, beauty, and joy on earth! The concert is held on Saturday, November 21st, 2009 at 8pm, in the outstanding acoustics of Eastminster United Church (310 Danforth Avenue), were since 1991, using period instruments and authentic performance styles, the Academy Concert Series has presented innovative programmes of exceptional artistic quality.
